Eastern Airlines Flight 1320 is hijacked en route to Boston.

March 17, 1970

New Jersey resident John Divio, 27, armed with a handgun, enters the plane’s cockpit as it begins its descent to Logan Airport. In the struggle that follows, copilot Jim Hartley is killed, Divio is wounded, and pilot Bob Wilbur, though wounded, manages to land the plane, carrying 68 passengers and five other crew members, safely. The first killing by a hijacker in the U.S., the incident leads to increased airline security measures that are strengthened after hijackings in Boston and two other cities in 2001.*
